Foreword
Tax Mitigation
Most of what gets written about taxes is either too vague to act on or too technical to finish. We wrote this book to sit in the space between — the strategies we actually use with clients, explained in plain language, with none of them dressed up as magic.
The idea underneath all of it is straightforward. Taxes are the largest expense most investors will ever carry, and close to the only one you can change by making a decision a few months earlier. A dollar you keep out of this year's bill stays invested and keeps compounding — and over a long enough horizon, that is worth more than the dollar itself. Every chapter here is a specific, legal way to act on that.
We've tried to be honest about the cost of each one. Every strategy in this book asks for something in return — capital locked up for years, a deadline that does not forgive, real money at genuine risk — and we say so in the chapter where it lives, because the most expensive mistake in this field is a well-run strategy aimed at the wrong problem. You don't have to read these in order. Find the situation that looks like yours and start there.
None of this replaces the conversation with your CPA and your attorney. What it does is let you walk into that room already knowing which questions matter. That is the real goal — not to turn you into a tax expert, but to make you a much harder person to sell something you don't need.
